FAQs
The US Dollar Index (USDX) is a widely recognised financial indicator that measures the value of the United States dollar (USD) against a basket of other major currencies. It is often referred to as DXY, which is the ticker symbol used in financial trading markets.
The DXY index includes:
- Euro (EUR): 57.6%
- Japanese yen (JPY): 13.6%
- British pound (GBP): 11.9%
- Canadian dollar (CAD): 9.1%
- Swedish krona (SEK): 4.2%
- Swiss franc (CHF): 3.6%
If the index rises, the US dollar is strengthening against the basket overall. If it falls, the dollar is weakening.
The index was introduced in 1973 following the move away from the Bretton Woods fixed exchange-rate system. Its composition changed when the euro was introduced in 1999, but it continues to use a fixed-weight basket.
